Flying 101: What To Know Before Your First Flying Lesson

June 18th, 2021|Ground School|

What To Expect From Your First Flying Lesson

You’ll remember your first flying lesson for the rest of your life. It’s such an exciting experience that not only will it likely be one of your fondest memories, but it can also be quite nerve-wracking. You may be too excited to focus, or you may be worried about mistakes you may make. With the right preparation, you can calm those nerves a bit and really enjoy every bit of the experience of that first lesson.

Here are a few things you can do to prepare for your first flying lesson:
What To Expect From Your First Flying Lesson In Mesa

Learn About The Flight School & Instructor

Knowing that you are training under one of the best instructors and at one of the best flight schools can put your mind at ease and help you feel more confident during your lesson. Spend some time searching for the best school before you decide where to start your training.

When you decide on the school and arrange for your lessons, then find out what instructor will be conducting the lesson and learn what you can about the instructor. You will feel more assured learning about the experience of the person teaching you. You might even learn a thing or two that you can use to break the ice and make conversation during your lesson so that you feel even more comfortable.

Get a Basic Understanding Of The Airplane Cockpit Controls

One of the most intimidating aspects of that first flying lesson is looking at all the controls in the cockpit and realizing you have absolutely no idea what to do. The controls aren’t going to be like what you’ve seen in a car or, really, anywhere else. You’ll learn about all the controls and how to use them over the course of your lessons, but it will help you feel more relaxed if you spend a little time learning about basic controls before you arrive for your lesson.

Learn about things like the direction of the throttle to give you more power, what a yoke does, where to find the altimeter, and so on. When you sit in that cockpit for the first time, you’ll feel better oriented, and you’ll get more out of the lesson.

Familiarize Yourself With The Pilots Checklists

Pilots use a series of checklists to help them during pre-flight, flight, landing, and more. The checklists help pilots ensure that they do not forget any of the important steps. When you are beginning learning how to fly, chances are high that you will forget important information. You can find these checklists online or in pilot stores, and you can orient yourself with them ahead of time. Then you can bring your own laminated checklists to refer to during your lesson.

Learn The Fundamentals At Ground School

Many times, you will be required to attend ground school before you can ever set foot inside a cockpit. But even if ground school is not required before you begin your flight lessons, it’s a good idea to attend first. Ground school covers all the basics of aviation mechanics and theory, safety protocols, the way that weather influences flight, and much more. You’ll learn the theory and science behind flight before you get in the cockpit to learn the practicalities of how to do it. That will make you feel more comfortable and will give you the knowledge you need to make decisions in the air.

The more you can do to prepare for your first flight lesson, the better it will go. You can feel more at ease in the cockpit and better ready to learn. Start by finding a great ground school and flight academy to do your training. When you have the right instructors on your side, you will feel more confident in your studies, knowing that you have a great experience ahead of you.

Why is Ground School a Critical Step in Your Flight Training?

June 7th, 2021|Ground School|

Top Reasons Why Going To Ground School Is Important To Start a Career As a Pilot In Arizona

Pilot training involves two primary components: Ground school and flight school. With flight school, you are learning the actual controls of the aircraft and the practicalities of how to fly the craft. With ground school, you are learning about the theory behind aviation, the mechanics of how the plane works, how weather influences flying, aviation regulations, and more. Ground school prepares you for the knowledge test you have to take to become a licensed pilot.

You may think that learning how to actually fly is the most important part of your training, but ground school plays a critical role in your overall flight training. Here are a few reasons why Arizona ground school is so important:

Why is Ground School a Critical Step in Your Flight Training?

Enjoy Enhanced Learning

You can certainly learn what you need to know for the knowledge test through independent study, either in books or in materials you find online. However, your educational experience is enhanced when you learn from a knowledgeable instructor. You get more intensive information, you can ask specific questions, and you can explore the information from a variety of angles to gain a real understanding of the material. You’ll learn the material more easily and more extensively than you would if you were accessing the information independently.

Understand the Theory and Science behind Your Actions

When you are in the cockpit, you need to know more than what levers and buttons to hit and when. You need to understand what is behind your actions. You need to know the mechanics of the aircraft, the science behind flight, the way weather influences your craft, and much more. You will use this knowledge to make informed decisions when you encounter something unexpected or you have an emergency.

You’ll also learn about the mechanics of the aircraft, which can help you troubleshoot simple problems in the cockpit. You’ll learn emergency protocols, as well as how to improvise when the protocols you know do not produce results.

Learn about Important Regulations

Flying an aircraft is a heavily regulated activity. You will need to learn about all the laws and regulations regarding flying, both domestically and internationally. Ground school will cover these things in depth, as well as information about how to navigate violations.
You’ll also learn about any recent legislative changes or potential upcoming changes. You’ll also learn about great resources for keeping up with these changes on your own, outside of your continuing education.

Get Updated Training

You don’t need ground school just when you are starting out your career as a pilot. It offers more than introductory education and training.

Ground school can also offer updated training and continuing education for experienced pilots. You can go to ground school at any time to learn about the latest in safety procedures, flight controls, aviation science, aviation regulations, and much more.

You should plan to attend ground school periodically throughout your career to get a refresher on your education so that you have the knowledge to always be the best pilot you can be.

Ground school isn’t just something that you have to go through to become a pilot. It is a critical component of your education and training. You learn essential theory, science, and law through your ground school training that you will use everyday in your career as a pilot. Even if you are an experienced pilot, you will need to periodically return to ground school to update your skills and knowledge to ensure that you are always performing at your best. Make sure you find the best ground school in your area to have the best experience.
